Activity #1-Interactive Timeline
In the framework of the class, students can develop a hands-on, dynamic and interactive timeline chronicling Abraham's journey that parallels historical events of migration from the Balkans. This will serve as an engaging visual representation to understand and reinforce the parallels over centuries.
Activity #2-Empathetic Role-playing
Create an immersive role-playing exercise that allows students to step into the shoes of the characters. This will help cultivate empathy and deepen their understanding of the choices and dilemmas faced by the story's protagonists and how they can relate to personal and cultural challenges the students themselves may also be experiencing. As students are able to recognize and identify with the characters’ problems, they can learn from their example and gain guidance in formulating resolutions to their own problems.
Activity #3-Discussion Panels
Arrange a panel session on crucial contemporary topics such as migration, displacement, cultural identity, collective trauma and faith with hand-out tools to foster insightful discussions. Add an expert guest lecturer and other local voices to provide diverse perspectives. By taking more time to explore and analyze the current relevance of these related topics, students will learn how topics related to displacement, refugee-status, global mobility and diasporic experiences contribute to notions of “home” in their own lives, neighborhoods and Balkan communities.
Activity #4-Navigating Diversity and Faith
Students can explore how the themes of faith and identity in Lech-Lecha also offer guidance in navigating contemporary challenges, particularly those related to multicultural societies and diverse communities. By studying the diverse encounters and interactions Abraham had on his journey with other cultures and beliefs, students can develop strategies for embracing diversity fostering inclusivity and developing kind interactions with people of different faiths.
Activity #5-Relevance of Identity
The themes and topics of Lech Lecha can also serve as a catalyst for discussing the intersection and complexities of identities we can form around culture, religion, ethnicity, nationality, and gender. Students can explore how these various identities operate in their own lives and how interactions with others can benefit from tolerance, respect, and mutual understanding.
